How many times do we hear about lowering your cholesterol? As with so many things related to our health and well being – cholesterol is another subject that is misunderstood. Fortunately, there are simple basic strategies for controlling cholesterol that can avoid the use of statin drugs. (Before you take a statin drug read this article.)
First, you need to understand that simply lowering your dietary cholesterol intake is not an effective primary strategy. This is because 75 percent of your cholesterol is produced by your liver, which is influenced by your insulin levels.
Another cause of elevated cholesterol is inflammation which causes high insulin levels. When this happens your body increases it’s cholesterol production in an effort to reduce the inflammation. An article by Dr. Mercola states that insulin and cholesterol are tightly linked.
Exercise is a very effective way to optimizing your insulin levels. Also remember that high glycemic foods cause a rapid rise in blood sugar and thus increase insulin levels to reduce the sugar. Pay attention to the foods you eat because this indirectly contributes to high cholesterol by making your liver produce more of it.
Here’s the list that Dr. Mercola recommends for safely lowering and regulating your cholesterol levels:
- Get an appropriate amount of exercise – walking 3-4 days per week for 30 minutes as a minimum
- Eat nutritionally dense food, a good portion raw
- supplement with high quality animal-based omega 3 fats
- Reduce grains and sugars in your daily diet, especially fructose. Keep your total fructose level below 25 grams a day
Here is a list of foods that may help to lower your cholesterol; some help raise your good cholesterol (HDL) and some help lower your bad cholesterol (LDL). These foods have lots of fiber and omega 3’s along with other valuable nutrients.
- mushrooms
- walnuts
- blueberries
- salmon
- garlic
- onions
- avocado
- black beans
- apples
- dark green leafy vegetables(spinach, kale, swiss chard, collard greens)
- oatmeal
Remember the body was designed to heal itself. Be responsible and give it what it needs to do that. Cholesterol is vital for optimal health. Implement ways to keep it in a healthy range with natural strategies that work.
A quote from Dr. Barry Sears regarding omega 3 supplementation, “This is why meta-analyses comparing all published statin trials and those trials using fish oil supplementation have shown that fish oil has a greater impact on decreasing cardiovascular mortality and all-cause than any statin drug. More importantly, the only reported side effect of fish oil is that it makes you smarter.” Click here to order Omega 3′s.
